Ear Infections in Kids

NEWS. DR. JAY KINLEY IS WITH UGS. THANKS FOR HAVING ME. WE’RE TALKING ABOUT EAR INFECTIONS IN CHILDREN. WHAT’S A CAUSE? TYPICALLY WHAT WE THINK OF, EAR INFECTIONS THERE’S TWO MAIN TYPES. THERE’S THE — BEHIND THE REAR DRUM. AND THEN WHAT WE CALL THE SWIMMER’S EAR. IT’S IN THE EAR CANAL, CAUSED BY BACTERIA, GETS IN THERE AND GROWS. IT COULD OCCUR AFTER SWIMMING, HENCE THE NAME. IT COULD OCCUR ANYTIME THERE’S MOISTURE BUILD-UP. TAKING A SHOWER. AND ALSO DIABETICS ARE PRONE TO THAT. BEHIND THE EARDRUM, NO EAR INFECTION THAT TYPICALLY PEOPLE WILL GET AND LITTLE KIDS WILL HAVE A LOT IS SOMETHING WE FACE. IT’S CAUSED BY ONE OR TWO THINGS, BACTERIA OR VIRUS. ANYTIME YOU HAVE AN IRE INFECTION, YOU HAVE TO HAVE ANTIBIOTICS, HAVE TO GET IT TREATED. THAT’S NOT ALWAYS THE CASE SOMETIMES IT’S CAUSED BY A VIRUS AND ANTIBOTTICS WILL NOT HELP. WE WANT TO TAKE LOOK, IS IT BEHIND THE EARDRUM. DOES IT NEED EAR DROPS OR DO YOU NEED ANTIBIOTICS OR JUST A WATCH AND WAIT AND GIVE IT SOME TIME. AND HOW COULD A PARENT TELL A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO, THINGS THEY SHOULD BE LOOKING FOR. IT’S TOUGH TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO. TYPICALLY WHAT HAPPENS, CHILDREN MAY NOT COMPLAIN ABOUT SPECIFICALLY I HAVE EAR PAIN. THEY MAY BE TUGGING AT THE EAR, ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY ARE REALLY LITTLE AND TUGGING IN THE EAR AND I THINK, MAYBE WHAT’S GOING ON AND THEY KEEP ON DOING THAT OVER AND OVER AGAIN. THAT COULD BE THE ONLY SIGNS SOMETIMES THEY HAVE AN EAR INFECTION. THE FEVER GOES ALONG WITH IT. FEVER IS COMMON. OTHER THING, TOO, IS IS THAT SOMETIMES YOU HAVE DRAINAGE FROM THE EAR, EITHER FROM BEHIND THE EARDRUM THAT’S POPPED OPEN AND RUPTURED OR THE EAR CANAL ITSELF. SO EITHER WAY, SYMPTOMS WILL BE SIMILAR IN CHILDREN, ESPECIALLY AND GETTING TO THE PROVIDER AND GETTING IT CHECKED OUT IS TRULY THE ONLY WAY TO KNOW. AND WHAT’S THE ADVANTAGES TO SEE WHAT’S BEHIND THE BEHAVIORS. AND AT TIMES, TUGGING IN THE EARS IS PAYING- EVEN THOUGH THE KID MAY NOT BE COMPLAINING OF PAIN. IT’S STILL BOTHERING THEM. THINGS LIKE TYLENOL COULD HELP WITH THE PAIN ITSELF, TO BE ABLE TO EASE THE DISCOMFORT. OTHER THING, CHILDREN OVER THE AGE OF 6 MONTHS COULD HAVE MOW TRIN AS WELL OR IBUPROFEN. AND THAT COULD HELP WITH THE FEVER AND PAIN ITSELF MUCH ESPECIALLY IF THEY ARE HAVING FEVER, GO AHEAD AND TRY TYLENOL OR MOTRIN. AT THE SAME TIME, IT’S A GOOD TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT IF THE EARDRUM RUPTURES, IT AFFECTS THEM LATER IN LIFE. IT’S GOOD TO GET IT CHECKED OUT. AND NOT QUITE SWIMMING SEASON SO, COULD CHILDREN WEAR EARPLUGS TO PREVENT INFECTION? THAT’S A GOOD QUESTION. KIDS IN BATHTUBS, SHOWER, THEY WILL GET THEIR WATER IN THEIR EAR. IT ATTRACTS WATER EASIER THAN OTHERS. REGARDLESS, CERTAINLY YOU COULD GET AN INFECTION. AND THINGS YOU COULD DO TO PREVENT IT, WHEN YOU GIVE YOUR KID A BATH OR SHOWER, TRY TO DRY AS MUCH AS YOU CAN. TOWEL AROUND THE EAR. IF KIDS ARE PRONE TO GET SWIMMER’S EAR OVER AND OVER, OBVIOUSLY SWIMMERS PLUGS, KEEP THE WATER OUT. OTHER THING, IF YOU KNOW THERE’S NOTHING ELSE GOING ON, YOU COULD USE ALCOHOL DROPS IN THE EAR, JUST TO DRY OUT THE MOISTURE REALLY GOOD AND KEEP IT FROM RECURRING. I WOULD ONLY DO THAT IF THE PROVIDER SAYS YOU HAVE TO START
