Eye screening at school reveals tumor in first grader

IMPORTANCE OF GETTING YOUR KIDS’ EYES CHECKED. (LAUREN) A ROUTINE EYE CHECK AT SCHOOL FOR A FISHERS BOY EARLIER THIS YEAR… SHOWED PROBLEMS WITH HIS LEFT EYE… THAT EVENTUALLY REVEALED A TUMOR. THAT LITTLE BOY IS NOW BACK IN SCHOOL… AND IS DOING WELL. 24 HOUR NEWS 8’S BRITTANY LEWIS SPOKE WITH HIS FAMILY ABOUT HIS TUMOR AND THE IMPORTANCE OF THAT EYE EXAM. (BRITTANY ) 8 YEAR OLD BLAKE EVERSON AND HIS LITTLE BROTHER, MAX HAVE BEEN GETTING THEIR EYES CHECKED SINCE THEY WERE 2. AND THIS FEBRUARY AT HIS ANNUAL EYE EXAM, BLAKE LEARNED HE NEEDED GLASSES. A FEW WEEKS LATER, A GROUP FROM OSSIP OPTOMETERY CONDUCTED EYE SCREENINGS AT BLAKE’S SCHOOL — GEIST ELEMENTARY IN FISHERS. THEY CHECKED BLAKE AND SENT HIM HOME WITH A LETTER SAYING HIS LEFT EYE NEEDED TO BE RE-CHECKED. HIS PARENTS FOUND THIS CONCERNING BECAUSE HE JUST HAD HIS ANNUAL EYE EXAM… SO THEY WENT BACK TO THEIR EYE DOCTOR AND HAD AN MRI DONE. THAT MRI REVEALED A MASS ON HIS PITUITARY GLAND…WHICH IS JUST BEHIND THE BRIDGE OF THE NOSE AND IT WAS PRESSING ON HIS OPTIC NERVE…LOCATED IN THE BACK OF HIS EYE… WHICH WAS IMPAIRING HIS VISION. THE TUMOR WAS BENIGN — SO IT WASN’T CANCER, BUT IT DID REQUIRE AN 8 HOUR BRAIN SURGERY TO REMOVE MOST OF THE TUMOR… FOLLOWED BY SIX WEEKS WORTH OF PROTON BEAM RADIATION THERAPY TO HELP SHRINK WHAT WAS LEFT OF THE TUMOR. (( AND NOW WE’VE COME SUCH A LONG WAY, HE’S DOING BEAUTIFULLY, HE’S IN SECOND GRADE NOW, IN JULY HE HAD AN MRI THAT REVEALED HIS TUMOR IS SHRINKING, HIS VISION HAS IMPROVED AND HE’S DOING BEAUTIFULLY . )) BLAKE’S FAMILY SAYS HIS POSITIVE ATTITUDE HELPED MAKE THAT ATTITUDE HELPED MAKE THAT HAPPEN. COMING UP IN OUR NEXT HOUR OF DAYBREAK… HEAR MUCH MORE FROM BLAKE’S FAMILY AND HEAR FROM ONE OF THE OPTOMETRISTS AT OSSIP OPTOMETRY ABOUT HOW IMPORTANT IT IS FOR YOUR KID’S TO GET THEIR EYES CHECKED… AT AN EARLY AGE.
