The most common reasons of sounds and pain in the jaw joint are disturbance of TMJ disc space and problems with the muscles holding the lower jawbone and disc. For example, if one of the jaw joint disc space narrows or muscles holding the disc get tensed, when the mouth is opened or closed, the jaw disc jammed causing it to move in a zigzag or to make a sound in the jaw joint. Ignoring such symptoms can lead to lockjaw. If symptoms get severe, these can lead to jaw dislocation.
