It's not " hyperflexible (or hypermobile)". They're two components that together make you more bendy. The flexibility is in the ligaments/tendons. The mobility is in the joints. Sofie is what's often referred to as "healthy hypermobile". I was like that when I was around her age – it made things like yoga and gymnastics super easy – but now I'm starting to devolve into an unhealthy state (I have hEDS, aka "my body produces defective collagen"), where my joints slip out of alignment while I'm walking down the street, picking a cup of coffee up off the table, or even just shifting slightly in my seat. So for those in the comments wishing they could do what Sofie does: be careful what you wish for. Charmingly presented and very informative video. One thing I learned along with way in my Yoga studies, is that when you stretch muscles, gently, they send a signal to the nervous system (via the proprioceptors) that all is OK, helps the mind relax more, that kind of thing. After all, don't you feel your muscles tensing when you're stressed? Well, Yoga does the opposite! Hey, Jesus did Yoga! (just kidding, again…!) Hypermobility and hyperflexibility are two VERY DIFFERENT THINGS. I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, which means I am hypermobile. I have defective collagen. Hypermobility is genetic, you're born with it. It can also be debilitating. I for example dislocate my joints hundreds of times a day, I have to wear metal splints on my fingers to stop my fingers from dislocating every time I pick up a pencil. The hypermobility doesn't just affect joints either, it's skin, hair…. Even organs. My hypermobility has paralysed my stomach, so I can never eat solid food again. It's also caused brain fluid to leak from my nose, it also makes me pass out when I stand up sometimes. As you can tell, there's a massive distinction between hypermobility and flexibility already. Flexibility is from stretching, this is what contortionists do. They condition their joints to get used to this. I used to be a contortionist until I had to stop. Flexibility is not debilitating, you can go about your life normally when you're not purposely stretching. Flexibility is the result of training, you aren't born with it. Feeling even more motivated now. :p Reply Sopr_aa October 2, 2019 I swear a stretch for a year and I gain 2 cm 😂😂 I stretch mostly my leg and spine back and I get more flexible Reply Samsonerd October 3, 2019 05:00 can you share a paper that shows that stretching can make the muscle longer by adding sarcomers? I often hear that claim but I haven't seen any evidence supporting it. Thank you! Reply minty gachalifebanana October 3, 2019 Uh.. I did the assessment and got a nine… Reply Chris Walker October 4, 2019 Thank you so much for making an informative, evidence-based stretching video! I've seen so much misinformation bandied about vis-a-vis stretching in my life. First that static stretching was essential before any type of exercise to prevent injury and soreness. and then the pendulum swung so far the other way when some studies threw cold water on the idea of static stretching before an athletic performance. Now you hear so many bro-scientists interpret that as "you should never do static stretching." Like bruh. What about mobility? Reply Alberto Cuteri October 4, 2019 <3 Reply Karim Makhlas October 5, 2019 It only gives u more options for se* positions Reply Elaine Shang October 5, 2019 To know if you have a spine can't you just feel it? Reply лол кек October 13, 2019 (Sorry for my English) So if you start stretching your legs, then will the collagen type change in your arms, spine etc? Will all of the body become more flexible if only one part of it is being trained? Or it happens only in the body part you train?
